Plot summary
David Sumner, a screenwriter, leaves Los Angeles with his wife Amy, an actress, for Blackwater, Mississippi, the small town where she grew up. They move into her late father's house so David can finish a script. In town they meet Charlie, whom Amy dated years earlier; he and three friends, Norman, Chris and Bic, have been hired to fix the barn roof on the property. The men work slowly, play loud music that carries into the house, and speak crudely about Amy, and she is angry that David will not confront them. David also meets Tom Heddon, an alcoholic former football coach who bullies Jeremy Niles, a local man his teenage daughter Janice pursues.
