Plot summary
Mike is a young boy who lives with his father, Tom, in the isolated sand dunes of South Australia's Coorong, the coastal stretch where the land faces the Southern Ocean, near the mouth of the Murray River. Tom keeps to himself, and people know him as Hide-Away Tom; Mike has no company on the deserted shore. Wandering the coast in search of friendship, he meets Fingerbone Bill, an Aboriginal man who has separated from his tribal people and lives apart in the wilderness. Fingerbone gives Mike the name Storm Boy and asks the child to help him care for three orphaned pelican chicks.
