Trailer

Plot summary

Antoine Doinel leaves military service, judged unfit because he spent his time reading novels and writing letters to Christine Darbon instead of obeying orders. Christine is away skiing when he calls at her family's home, and her parents arrange for him to work nights at the Hôtel Alsina, where he mostly reads. One morning a man and a private detective arrive and have Antoine show them to a room; a woman inside is with another man, and her furious husband wrecks the place. Antoine is blamed and dismissed. He befriends the detective and joins his agency. The job pulls him away from Christine. Georges Tabard, who owns a shoe store, hires the agency to learn why his employees dislike him, and Antoine, posing as a stock boy though he has never worked in a shop, meets Tabard's wife Fabienne.
