Plot summary
At a cemetery in Montpellier, mourners gather for Bertrand Morane's funeral, and Geneviève Bigey notices that every other person there is a woman. Bertrand works in a laboratory testing scale models of aircraft, but he devotes himself to pursuing women. He meets Hélène, who sells lingerie and tells him she is attracted only to younger men. Sensing a coming change in his way of life, he begins to write his memoirs, recalling a first sexual encounter with a prostitute and a mother who was beautiful, cold, and often left him alone for days.
