Plot summary
George Bynum, a patient of Manhattan psychiatrist Dr. Sam Rice, is found stabbed to death in his car. Detective Joseph Vitucci questions Sam, who says nothing about their sessions. Vitucci reports that a woman argued with Bynum in a bar and followed him out, and warns Sam that the killer may believe he knows something. Brooke Reynolds, Bynum's mistress and an employee at the auction house where he worked, comes to Sam's office and asks him to give Bynum's watch to his wife without revealing the affair. Sam agrees and hides her from Vitucci when the detective arrives. Rereading his notes of Bynum's sessions, he finds Bynum's crude remarks about Brooke and feels protective of her.
