Plot summary
Father Andrew Kiernan is a Jesuit priest and former scientist who investigates supposed miracles for the Vatican. In the Brazilian village of Belo Quinto, a statue of the Virgin Mary weeps blood at the funeral of Father Paulo Alameida, a priest who had suffered stigmata. A boy steals a rosary from the dead priest's hand, and it reaches Frankie Paige, a hairdresser in Pittsburgh. An unseen force attacks her while she bathes and leaves puncture wounds on her wrists. Doctors suspect she inflicted the wounds herself, and she denies it.

- The film's Vatican interiors and its Pittsburgh archdiocese scenes were actually shot in the same building, the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City, standing in for two different real-world locations.
- Director Rupert Wainwright first came across Tom Lazarus' script for Stigmata in 1992, and then spent the next five years trying to get the film greenlit.
