Plot summary
Chris Flynn, a medical student, is driving through the West Virginia mountains toward a business meeting when a chemical spill halts traffic. Eager to make up time, he turns onto a remote mountain road and smashes into a car left standing there. The car's five occupants, Jessie, Carly, Scott, Evan, and Francine, were on their way out to camp, and their tire has been shredded by barbed wire that someone strung across the road on purpose. Unable to drive on, Evan and Francine stay with the vehicles while the others walk into the woods for help. Somewhere in those woods live three mountain men, disfigured by generations of inbreeding, who eat human flesh.

- While shooting a sequence in which her character falls through a series of tree branches, the actress Emmanuelle Chriqui really did fall and dislocate her shoulder, which required weeks of recovery.
- Alan B. McElroy devised the idea for the film after he and his wife were forced to detour on a rural side road during a snowstorm to avoid a major traffic collision: "As we're doing that, in the dark, in a snowstorm, we're thinking, 'Is this a smart idea?'"
- Wrong Turn was one of the very first R-rated films, and the first ever in the horror genre, released on Disney+ in the United States in April 2022, though the decision was dropped by the time it became available in Canada.
- Fox reportedly had trouble securing an R rating from the MPAA because of the film's intense violence, and many of its TV spots were also refused approval; this is possibly one reason the later Wrong Turn films went straight to video.
- Though set in West Virginia, filming of Wrong Turn actually took place in a nature reserve north of Toronto, Ontario, in Canada.

In a mid-credits scene a deputy sheriff investigates the remains of the destroyed cabin, and Three Finger, who survived the explosion, rises and kills the deputy while laughing maniacally.
