Plot summary
Billy Wyatt, once a high school and minor-league ballplayer, is in his thirties, living in a hotel, when his mother, Ginny, telephones with news that Katie Chandler has died. Katie minded him as a boy and became his first love in his teens, and her will asks Billy to take charge of her ashes, believing he would know what to do with them. He promises his mother he will come home that night. Memories of the 1960s return: Katie looking after him for the Wyatts, the friendship between his family and the Chandlers, and the baseball pendant she gave him as a birthday gift.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Stealing Home (1988)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Warner Bros. spent years trying to buy back the rights to Summer of '42, which it had sold to author Herman Raucher instead of paying him a flat fee. Stealing Home was greenlit soon after Raucher refused the studio's latest approach, prompting Summer of '42 star Jennifer O'Neill to say it was "stolen" from that film.
- Mark Harmon was a part-owner of the minor-league San Bernardino Spirit when the film shot its opening and closing scenes at Fiscalini Field, the team's home park. His stake in the club is why his character is shown playing for the Spirit.
