Plot summary
John Plummer works for Mr. Warner, the father of his fiancée Elaine, and the pair have saved $30,000 for a down payment on a house. His sister Patty's daughter Noreen is accepted to Harvard, where her grants and scholarships still leave a gap of some $30,000, and she reminds John of a promise he made on videotape to pay for her college. Elaine's father dislikes him, and John now risks disappointing either his fiancée or his niece, who sees college as her way out of poverty. He confides in his friend Walter "Duff" Duffy, a landscaper, who persuades him to steal cash that one of his rich clients keeps in an unlocked safe.
