Plot summary
Abner Procane is a burglar in Los Angeles. He finds that someone has stolen his plans for an ambitious heist, five journals that were taken from his safe, and he wants them back. Procane and his assistant hire Raymond St. Ives to negotiate the return of the documents. St. Ives is an ex-policeman who has worked as a crime reporter and written crime novels, and he takes the job as go-between. The stolen papers spell out a robbery Procane means to carry out, and St. Ives becomes embroiled in the task of recovering them for Procane.
