Plot summary
In 1957, Mary is young, pregnant and homeless. She runs from her abusive father after her younger brother William dies in an accident, and when her boyfriend Jimmy goes on tour with his band, she stays behind and eats at a soup kitchen. A nun there offers her refuge in a convent in small town Georgia, where Mother Superior sets strict rules that the girls must follow, and where silence is forced. Other girls are housed there too. At first it seems a good place for her to have her child. When Mary tries to leave, the nuns drug her, rename her Agatha and keep her inside.
