Plot summary
On the first manned mission to Mars, Commander Patrick Ross and his crewmates Anne Sampas and Dennis Gamble collect soil samples. The soil thaws on the trip home and releases an organism that contaminates the three astronauts, who are quarantined and examined after a public celebration. Under military supervision, Dr. Laura Baker works with Eve, a more docile clone of the hybrid Sil. While Eve shows signs of excitement whenever Patrick has sex, he ignores the quarantine, and the women he lies with give birth to hybrids that he conceals in a shed belonging to his father, Senator Judson Ross. Baker brings back her former colleague Press Lennox to contain the danger.

- Because Natasha Henstridge hadn't yet confirmed she would return, writer Chris Brancato scripted the new character Eve to work as 'either Natasha or a similarly beautiful woman'; Henstridge ultimately signed on partly to work with director Peter Medak.
- Assuming Forest Whitaker would be too busy to reprise his Species role, the writer created a new character, Dennis Gamble, with a similar background, and cast Mykelti Williamson in the part instead.
- Patrick Ross's monstrous combat form was designed with input from H. R. Giger, the same artist behind the Alien films' Xenomorph, which is why the two creatures look so similar.
