Plot summary
Bethany Hamilton is thirteen and lives on Kauai in Hawaii with her family. Her parents are Tom and Cheri, and her brothers are Noah and Timmy, and all five of them surf. Bethany and her closest friend Alana Blanchard have spent most of their childhood entering contests side by side. After Bethany takes first place and Alana third at one of them, Rip Curl offers both girls sponsorship and a photo shoot. To get ready for the next contest, the two skip a church mission trip to Mexico, which disappoints their youth leader Sarah Hill. On Halloween, Tom goes in for knee surgery while Bethany paddles out with Alana, Alana's father Holt and her brother Byron. A tiger shark bites off Bethany's left arm below the shoulder. Holt fashions a tourniquet from his swimshirt.

- A scene in which Dennis Quaid's character reads the Bible at his daughter's hospital bedside had the words “Holy Bible” digitally removed from the cover. Bethany Hamilton's father said Mandalay Pictures executive David Zelon had lobbied to reduce the film's Christian elements; the family objected and the words were restored at a follow-up screening.
- Another debated scene had Carrie Underwood's character, a church youth leader, quote Jeremiah 29:11. Those involved were fine with the verse but did not want the scene to indicate that it came from the Bible; their stance was challenged, and the finished scene names the source.
