Plot summary
Lydie is Agnes Ward's closest friend from their graduate student days at Fairport, in rural Belfast, Maine. Their doctoral study group is led by Preston Decker, who praises Agnes's thesis draft and invites her to his home to discuss his notes. The same praise provokes bitterness in Natasha, another member of the group. Agnes leaves his house in the middle of the night, and afterward she tells Lydie what happened there. Decker resigns the next day, and Fairport's disciplinary team says it cannot investigate or punish him now that he has left the college. Agnes takes in a stray kitten she names Olga and decides not to press charges.
