Plot summary
Star lives in Muskogee, Oklahoma, looking after two children who are not her own and living with their father, Nathan. She meets a van of young people who sell magazine subscriptions on the road, leaves in the night, and sleeps beneath their van until morning. Their leader, Krystal, questions her before hiring her, satisfied that Star is legally grown, that nobody will come looking for her, and that she means to work hard. In Kansas, Star is paired with Jake, the crew's veteran, who teaches her his way of selling and takes a ring from one of the houses they visit. She is drawn to him.

- Andrea Arnold discovered Sasha Lane while she was on spring break with her friends; Lane subsequently auditioned for the film and was cast in the lead role, with no screen experience behind her.
- Arnold "street cast" the film by searching beaches and streets, while casting directors Lucy Pardee and Jennifer Venditti scoured Walmart stores, bars and dollar stores to scout individuals who would fit the roles of the mag crew youths.
- Arnold said the film was inspired by an investigative piece she read in The New York Times about mag crews, optioned from The Times and Ian Urbina in 2008; she researched it on a road trip from California to Miami.
- The shoot ran over 56 days across several states: on 24 June, LaBeouf was hospitalized after being injured on set during filming in Williston, North Dakota, and filming wrapped on 5 July 2015.
