Plot summary
On the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, Jashaun Winters lives with her mother Lisa and her older brother John. John is finishing high school and earns money by selling alcohol to people on the reservation. He plans to move to Los Angeles with his girlfriend Aurelia, and his imprisoned brother Cody tells him to go. Their father, Carl Winters, dies in a house fire, and the siblings attend a crowded funeral; he had 25 children with 9 women. Jashaun takes a job helping Travis, an artist newly out of prison, sell his work, and he tells her why the number 7 matters to their generation.
