Plot summary
In 1987, Mike Sardina takes a booking at the Wisconsin State Fair, standing in for a Don Ho impersonator recovering from emergency surgery. The promoter will not let him play his own songs, so Mike refuses the stage and walks away from the job. Claire Stengl is a hairdresser who performs at night and is preparing an act as Patsy Cline. The two meet again the next year as neighbors, and she points him to Neil Diamond's music. He watches her sing, starts practicing, and the pair decide to perform together as Lightning and Thunder. Their romance begins, and their first booking together goes wrong when they misjudge who the audience will be.
