Plot summary
Favoritism, not ability, decides who gets ahead in Florence, and three thirty-somethings have each felt it. Max works as a reporter at a local newspaper, where he was pushed to write for an unlikely magazine, and the employment he needed went to the daughter of a famous writer. Irma is one of the most respected doctors at her hospital and lives on scholarships; a contract she was due went to the head physician's new girlfriend. Meeting again twenty years after school, the friends recognize the same obstacle in their setbacks and decide to fight a system that keeps promoting the favorites.
