Biography

Giorgio Albertazzi was an Italian actor whose career stretched across the stage, cinema and television. Born in 1923, he became an actor in 1949, making his debut in William Shakespeare's Troilus and Cressida under Luchino Visconti's direction, and he went on to perform in numerous plays, among them works by Luigi Pirandello, George Bernard Shaw and Lillian Hellman. He also ran a drama school from the mid-1990s and, from 2003, the Teatro di Roma. Viewers of French art cinema knew him as the stranger in Alain Resnais and Alain Robbe-Grillet's film Marienbad (1961), while his other Italian pictures were mostly modest productions. On television he played Prince Miskin in Giacomo Vaccari's L'idiota (1959), took the parts of Dante and Don Giovanni in works by Vittorio Cottafavi, and adapted, directed and starred as both Doctor Jekyll and Mister Hyde in Jekyll (1969). He died in 2016.
