Plot summary
The Tsaatan, the reindeer people of Mongolia's eastern taiga, are Sodura's people. Her parents died when she was small, and she was taken to the big city, where she never adapted to the life. She left an abusive lover and went back to the taiga, pregnant. The tribe blames her for carrying an outsider's child, and a childhood friend is the only one who understands what she is going through. She loves him, but his father, the tribal leader, has arranged his marriage to a girl of a western tribe, to renew a bloodline that is failing. Herdsmen find that poachers have killed all but three of the taiga's endangered moose.
