Plot summary
Ben Barrett is thirteen and has been in trouble once too often in Chicago. His mother, Amanda, takes him out of the city and leaves him for the summer with her estranged father, Jack, who farms in Iowa and is grumpy by nature. Jack puts good food in front of the boy and sets him to work at farm chores. A dog joins the household as well; the family that owned him before could not afford to keep him. Ben calls the dog Smitty, a name he borrows from Mr. Smith, the wise storekeeper in town who has befriended him.
