Plot summary
Bitter and self-absorbed, Lawrence Wetherhold teaches English at Carnegie Mellon and takes little interest in the students in his lecture hall. His son James keeps his distance at college, his daughter Vanessa pushes herself hard through her final year of high school, and his adopted brother Chuck, with no job and nowhere to sleep, has come to town. Lawrence parks where he should not, the campus impounds the car, and a guard who once sat in his class refuses to release it. Climbing the fence for his briefcase, Lawrence falls and has a seizure, and the emergency room physician, Janet Hartigan, was once his student. Since he cannot drive, Vanessa arranges for Chuck to move in as his driver.
