Plot summary
Late in 1985, Bill Furlong runs a coal business in New Ross and provides for his wife Eileen and their five daughters. The convent in the town numbers among his customers. On a delivery he watches a teenage girl being brought inside against her will, and on a later visit one of the girls asks him outright to get her out of the place. What he has seen brings back his own upbringing: his mother was unmarried, cast off by her relatives and taken on to work for Mrs Wilson, a landowner. Bill describes the convent to Eileen, who tells him not to meddle, since the girls have no other place to go. He answers that Mrs Wilson's attitude had been different, and that this had mattered for him and his mother.
