Plot summary
The explorer David is on safari in Africa when he shoots a leopard, and a primitive tribe seizes him, blaming him for disturbing the white rhinoceros spirit and bringing him before its high priest. When David touches a white rhino idol, lightning splits the temple wall and he escapes through the gap into a valley cut off from the world. There he meets Saria, a frightened blonde woman, and dark-haired warriors capture them both. In the settlement, blonde women serve dark-haired ones under Queen Kari, who rules with cruelty. David refuses her advances, and Kari has him locked in a cell with Saria.

- To save money, Hammer built Prehistoric Women almost entirely from sets and costumes left over from One Million Years B.C. (1966), including costumes designed by Carl Toms.
- Apart from a few stock-footage clips at the start, the entire production was filmed in a studio; cinematographer Michael Reed said the dust they worked in harmed the crew's health more than anything else.
