Louis Mahoney
Biography
Louis Mahoney was a Gambian-born British actor who moved to England in 1957 to study medicine before turning to drama at the Central School of Speech and Drama. After graduating he worked with Colchester Rep and the Mercury Theatre, and in 1967 he joined the Royal Shakespeare Company, becoming one of its earliest black members. He appeared often on stage, at the National Theatre, the Young Vic, the Royal Court and the Almeida, and his final performance was in 2018 in Allelujah!, written by Alan Bennett, at the Bridge Theatre. His television work ranged across Danger Man, Z-Cars, Doctor Who, Fawlty Towers, The Bill and Casualty. Films included The Plague of the Zombies (1966), Omen III: The Final Conflict (1981), Cry Freedom (1987) and Shooting Dogs (2005). He died in 2020.

After graduating, Mahoney worked with Colchester Rep and the Mercury Theatre, then in 1967 he joined the Royal Shakespeare Company, where he was among its first black actors.
Early training
After arriving in England in 1957 to study medicine at University College London, Mahoney gave it up for drama, training at what became the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama during the 1960s.
Behind the camera
In 1976, Mahoney helped start the UK's Black Theatre Workshop alongside Mike Phillips and Taiwo Ajai. He also spent years fighting for racial equality in acting, serving on Equity's Afro-Asian Committee.
