Plot summary
Khempur is a village where tradition governs daily life. Prerna, a teenager, follows her family's expectations but wants something more. Jessica, a British-Indian woman, comes to trace her late father's roots and befriends the local children. She posts a video of them playing with makeshift toys, and her friend Erick travels to the village with a proper board. Jessica orders skateboards, and together they teach the children, who are puzzled at first and then captivated. Prerna takes to the sport with natural talent. When she destroys Erick's board at the water dam, she steals money from her father to repay him; Jessica tells her to give it back instead. Her father finds out and forbids her from skating, insisting she focus on her studies and duties at home.

- Instead of recreating the skatepark on a set, the producers built Rajasthan's first and India's largest skatepark in Khempur, a village that was also a location for The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.
- After the trailer was released, Ulrike Reinhard and Asha Gond accused the filmmakers of stealing Gond's story of her rise as one of India's top skateboarders; director Manjari Makijany denied the film was about Gond.
- After filming ended in April 2019, the Khempur skatepark stayed open for free public use; hundreds of children around the village have been affected by skateboarding, and four kids went on to represent Rajasthan at the RSFI national championship.
- Over three thousand children were auditioned for Skater Girl, many of them skaters from skate communities across India, and real skateboarders who had never acted were trained to perform in front of the camera.
