Plot summary
Harry Odum is eighteen and lives in Youngstown, Ohio with his mother Kate, who treats him like a child. His father left Kate for another man. Harry's oldest friend, Arnie Finklestein, takes him to a strip club whose owner owes money to the mob, and when Arnie beats the man, Harry joins in and cannot stop himself. The outburst shocks Harry and also pleases him. Abie Pinkwise, Arnie's boss, spots his potential and offers him a place as his apprentice, which Harry accepts. Arnie's own plan, a small store robbery, goes wrong and lands him in jail. Abie begins showing Harry the business, including what is asked of a man who works for him.
