Plot summary
Syria is under French colonial rule, and in 1925 Damascus guerrillas are fighting the French. Harry Smith, an American black marketeer, secretly sells them weapons. As the situation worsens, General LaSalle orders that civilian sympathizers be executed each time his soldiers are killed, but Colonel Feroud, his head of military intelligence, persuades him to detain civilians for 48 hours instead. Feroud calls in five of the city's profiteers, among them Smith and Balukjiaan, accusing them of charging too much for food. Smith alone seems willing to cooperate. At a nightclub where Smith has been watching Violetta and drinking with his barber friend Nasir, a guerrilla-planted bomb explodes. Violetta leaves with Feroud, who is her lover.
