Plot summary
The church in Australia is worried about a crucifix painting that the artist Norman Lindsay plans to exhibit. It asks the Anglican priest Anthony Campion to visit him. Campion's wife Estella comes along. At Lindsay's home in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales, they meet Lindsay's wife Rose, the models Sheela and Pru, the maid Giddy, and Devlin, a half-blind and mute odd-job man. All of them pose for Lindsay. The visitors are disturbed by the household's open talk about sexuality and by the nudity they encounter.
