Plot summary
Ellen Ashland is attacked in a parking lot and wakes in a hospital to find she has been blinded. Her brother finds her an apartment, and she wakes there with no memory of the journey. Clayton, the nurse her brother hired, arrives to help her adjust to life without sight. One window carries a breeze and the sound of traffic below; the other is silent, and Clayton says its glass is thicker. Through a vent she hears a woman in distress in the adjoining apartment, and she leaves a sticky note asking her neighbor to tea. Lana arrives, frightened, and when Ellen touches her face she feels a wound with stitches. Lana whispers that she should trust no one and flees when Russo, her husband, arrives.
