Plot summary
In Tokyo, Osamu and Nobuyo Shibata share a small house with their son Shota, Aki, and the elderly Hatsue, who supports the household with her late husband's pension. Money is short: Nobuyo works at an industrial laundry and Osamu, a day laborer sidelined by a twisted ankle, gets by with Shota by shoplifting from stores, passing hand signals to each other. Osamu insists goods that no one has bought belong to no one. One cold night the two bring home Yuri, a girl from the neighborhood they often see shut out on a balcony. They mean for her to stay only for dinner, but they find signs of abuse at home and choose to keep her.

- Shoplifters won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, the first Japanese winner of the prize since The Eel in 1997.
- Writer-director Hirokazu Kore-eda toured an orphanage to research Shoplifters and wrote a scene inspired by a girl there who read from the picture book Swimmy by Leo Lionni.
- Cinematographer Kondo Ryuto shot Shoplifters on 35 mm film with an Arricam ST, choosing it for the texture and grain and because Kore-eda preferred the format.
- Kore-eda set the story in Tokyo and drew on the Japanese Recession, including media reports of how people lived in poverty and of shoplifting.
