Plot summary
Misumi, a man with a long criminal record, is charged with the robbery and murder of the president of a food factory in Kawasaki, who had recently dismissed him from his job. Misumi has confessed. Shigemori, a defense attorney, takes over the case from the previous lawyer and finds that his client gives a different account of the night each time they meet: one version places him under the influence, another describes a plan he had held for some time. Shigemori and his assistant Kawashima look for a way to reduce the charges. Thirty years earlier, when Misumi faced the same charges, the judge was Shigemori's father, who ruled against a death sentence.

- Because he was unfamiliar with how lawyers work in Japan's justice system, Hirokazu Kore-eda brought together seven lawyers over several months to stage mock trials and mock interviews of a criminal, taking notes on their language and thought processes.
- Hirokazu Kore-eda was inspired to write a courtroom thriller after talking with his friend, a lawyer, about the lawyer's experiences in court, where he learned that the court is not a space where people aim for the truth but one for lawyers "to make adjustments to the conflict [of] interest."
- The Third Murder was the first of Hirokazu Kore-eda's films to be shot in the Cinemascope format, which he had not used on any of his earlier work.
