Plot summary
Magobei Wakizaka is a samurai of the Sabai clan. When a gold ship from the island of Sado goes down, fishermen pull part of its cargo from the water, meaning to return it to the Tokugawa. The clan master, Rokugo Tatewaki, seizes the gold and has the fishermen killed so that no one can report the theft. Magobei had tried to prevent that slaughter and had been used to enable it; he leaves the clan and becomes a ronin, and Rokugo gives his word it will never happen again. Three years later, in Edo, killers working for Rokugo's retainer Kunai come after Magobei, and he understands that his old master intends to take more gold and kill again. He turns back toward Sabai, joined by Oriha, a survivor of the first slaughter, and her brother Rokuzo.
