Plot summary
The blind masseur Zatoichi comes to a village controlled by the yakuza boss Sukegoro, who pays him to fight in the war he expects against his rival Shigezo. Zatoichi has a name as a swordsman, and Sukegoro counts the fee well spent. Shigezo answers by hiring a ronin of similar reputation, Miki Hirate. Ichi carries himself as a meek, humble man, and the men around him, who hold a masseur in low regard, suspect and underestimate him. Hirate, an outcast himself, is the one who respects him. The ronin is sick with tuberculosis and wants to die with a sword in his hand, and both men know they will face each other when the fighting starts.
