Plot summary

Jennifer Miller is a self-absorbed teenager. After a clash with her ailing mother, she stumbles by accident into a local shelter for homeless people late one evening. Her father, Spencer Miller, is upset by how selfish his daughter has become. He gives her an ultimatum: she is to spend time volunteering at the shelter, and he hopes the work will teach her to take responsibility and to care about other people. At the shelter Jennifer gets to know the people who run it and one young guest in particular. A bond begins to form between the teenager and that guest.
