Plot summary
Thirteen scenes trace three decades in the professional and private life of a fictional actress named Shirley. Each scene is built from a painting by Edward Hopper, among them Office at Night, Western Motel, Usherette and A Woman in the Sun, and carries the date August 28 or 29 of its year. The settings move between Cape Cod, New York and Paris as the years pass from the 1930s into the 1960s, and each chosen moment sits against the public history of those decades in America. Around her in those scenes are Stephen, Mr and Mrs Antrobus and a chief clerk.
