Plot summary
A ban from licensed boxing has pushed Billy "Shiner" Simpson to the shady side of the fight game in South London. His twenty-year-old son Eddie is the champion he has been waiting for, and on the night of Eddie's bout Billy has wagered everything he owns; his quarrelling daughters have bet on the same result. Scotland Yard wants Billy charged over the death of a club brawler. Around the arena, Eddie is nervous, a man in a cap keeps appearing, the licensed promoter Billy hired to arrange the other fights has brought in dogs, and the camp of Eddie's opponent treats Billy and his corner of London with contempt.
