Plot summary
Vienna, 1910. Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson are elderly men now, and each has separately become caught up with Balkan terrorists, working on his own rather than as a pair. The two meet again by chance, and Holmes finds himself once more in the company of the actress Irene Adler. The conspiracy the two are working against centers on Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria, who is expected to attend the opera house, and a killing there could set a wider European war in motion. Sigmund Freud and Eliot Ness also appear among the historical figures of the period.
