Plot summary
Shell has lived at a remote petrol station in the Scottish Highlands since she was a child, after her mother left the family when she was four. Now seventeen, she runs the pumps and looks after her father Pete, a mechanic who suffers from epilepsy. Her days pass with the station's customers, among them Adam, a young sawmill worker, and Hugh, a divorced salesman. One night she and Pete help Robert and Clare, a couple whose car struck a deer on the road. Clare talks with Shell about the life she has led, and leaves her a book as a gift before going.
