Plot summary
Deputies Stuart Dempsey and Laura Russell are closing down a sheriff's station in the woods when a teenage boy walks in naked, covered in blood, a hunting knife in his hand. They arrest him and summon Sheriff Jack Sheppard, who has not solved the murder of a local girl a year earlier. Sheppard takes the case, hunting for the boy's name and for anyone else who may have been hurt, and hoping the answer will explain the disappearances that have troubled the area, his girlfriend's among them. The boy can read minds and show people his memories by touch. Somewhere in the woods, someone is killing and butchering people.

- Shallow Ground was shot on 16 mm film in June 2003 in Topanga Canyon for a budget of US$72,000, using the SAG Experimental Program, under which no actors were paid in advance.
- Natalie Avital said that for the scene where she hangs from a branch, the stunt coordinator had a box thrown in between takes so she could rest on it.
