Plot summary
Ann Bishop Mullany lives in Baton Rouge with her husband John, a lawyer, in a comfortable but unhappy marriage. In therapy she says the thought of his touch repels her. John is having an affair with her sister Cynthia, a bartender, and blames her frigidity. Graham Dalton, a college friend of John's who has been drifting and has some savings, comes to Baton Rouge to see John, who invites him to stay at the house until he finds an apartment of his own.

- Steven Soderbergh wrote the screenplay in eight days on a yellow legal pad during a cross-country trip, though he points out on his DVD commentary that he had been thinking about the film for a year beforehand.
- Soderbergh wrote Andie MacDowell's role for Elizabeth McGovern, but McGovern's agent disliked the script so much that she never got to read it. Laura San Giacomo, with the same agency, had to threaten to leave it before she could play Cynthia.
- Tim Daly was to play the husband John, but the financing took so long to close that he was cast in the television series Almost Grown, and the part went to Peter Gallagher instead.
- A budget of $1.2 million bought Soderbergh one week of rehearsal and a month of shooting in Baton Rouge in August 1988. He later called it "the only movie I've ever made where I felt like I had all the money and all the time I needed."
- The Palme d'Or the film won at Cannes in 1989 made Steven Soderbergh, then 26, the youngest solo director ever to take the festival's top prize.
