Plot summary
A nurse, Lieutenant Susan Briscoe, is escorting an amnesiac man known only as Mr. Smith, who was held by the Japanese during the war, to the United States. Their transport plane is piloted by Captain Allen Danton, and among the passengers are Colonel Yamura, being taken to Manila to answer war crime charges, and the Hartleys, who married the day they were freed from a prison camp. Yamura tricks a guard, seizes a gun and struggles with Allen at the controls, sending the aircraft into the sea. Susan's fiancé, Air-Sea Rescue pilot Captain Jim Willis, joins the search over the Pacific once the plane is reported missing. The survivors inflate a life raft, and Allen, who has a head wound, says they may have to try for an island 600 miles away.
