Plot summary
The Contenders is a television show in which the Department of Control selects citizens at random and gives them pistols loaded with polonium bullets, forcing them to hunt and kill each other until one is left. Series 7 is played in Newbury, Connecticut, the hometown of Dawn Lagarto, the longest reigning champion, who is eight months pregnant and has already won two tours of the game. The five new contenders are Lindsay Berns, an eighteen-year-old student, Franklin James, a retired man, Connie Trabucco, an emergency room nurse, Anthony Reilly, an unemployed asbestos remover, and Jeffrey Norman, an artist who was Dawn's high school sweetheart. Each contender has a small implanted charge that the show can detonate remotely if they try to leave the game.
