Plot summary
Max Seed was disfigured as a boy when a school bus crash killed everyone else on board. In 1973 he began torturing and killing people, recording some of his captives as they starved in a locked basement, until the total reached 666. Police trace a set of such recordings to his home, and Detective Matt Bishop takes him into custody, though five of Bishop's fellow officers die in the operation. Sentenced to death, Seed is held on an island prison and proves a quiet prisoner, violent only when three guards attack him. On the day set for his execution the chair fails twice. Because state law would free a man who survives three jolts, the staff and Bishop pronounce Seed dead and bury him in the prison cemetery.
