Plot summary
Insia Malik, fifteen, lives in Baroda with her mother Najma, her brother Guddu, her grandmother and her father Farookh, who beats his wife and forbids his daughter to sing. Najma secretly encourages her and gives her a laptop. Insia wants to enter a music contest whose prize is a laptop and a year of internet. Discovering that people post songs on YouTube, she records one in a niqab so Farookh cannot identify her, and uploads it as Secret Superstar. The video becomes an overnight sensation and reaches Shakti Kumar, a music director in Mumbai, who asks her to come record a song. She refuses, having heard negative things about him.

- Advait Chandan's idea for Secret Superstar came out of research for Aamir Khan's television talk show Satyamev Jayate, where he came across a single mother and victim of domestic abuse who, after her husband died, trained as a driver to support her household.
- Secret Superstar became the first Indian film to get a revenue-sharing deal in China, terms normally reserved for big Hollywood films, with Aamir Khan taking a 25% share of Chinese box-office revenue, double his 12.5% cut for Dangal.
- After its release in China, where its themes of feminism and domestic violence resonated, Secret Superstar was reportedly linked to an increase in Chinese women calling police for help with domestic violence.
- Aamir Khan had cast Zaira Wasim at 14 in Dangal; when director Advait Chandan told Khan he needed a girl of a similar age for Secret Superstar, Khan suggested Wasim, and Chandan cast her after testing her.
- Aamir Khan first approached A. R. Rahman to compose Secret Superstar and Prasoon Joshi to write its lyrics, reuniting the trio behind Rang De Basanti and Ghajini, but both opted out citing scheduling conflicts once production was delayed.
