Plot summary

Murad Ahmed is in his final year at university and lives in the Dharavi slums of Mumbai. His home life is turbulent: his father, Aftab Shakir Ahmed, brings a younger second wife into the house, and the family argues. Murad pours his frustration into rap lyrics. He also has a girlfriend, Safeena Firdausi, a medical student who is training to become a surgeon; her parents are strict, so the two meet in secret. When Aftab is injured, Murad takes work as a part-time chauffeur. Driving through the city, he notices the huge gap between rich and poor, and what he sees feeds into his writing. At a college festival he meets Shrikant Bhosle, an underground rapper called MC Sher. MC Sher mentors him, takes him to rap battles, and records a track with him that they put on YouTube.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Gully Boy (2019)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Gully Boy won a record 13 Filmfare Awards, the most for any single film in a year, among them Best Film, Best Director and the acting prizes for Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt.
  • Director Zoya Akhtar built the film's story around two real Mumbai MCs, Naezy and DIVINE, making a musical about an aspiring rapper and the surroundings that shape his journey.
  • The 13 Filmfare wins sparked a backlash: #BoycottFilmfare trended as fans called for a boycott, and lyricist Manoj Muntashir, whose Kesari song "Teri Mitti" lost Best Lyricist to "Apna Time Aayega", said he would skip future ceremonies.
  • The same haul made Gully Boy only the sixth film to take all four top Filmfare prizes — Best Film, Director, Actor and Actress — after Guide, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Devdas and Black.
  • The soundtrack runs to 18 songs and an estimated 54 contributors, from rappers to deejays and beatboxers; music supervisor Ankur Tewari said he worked with the group to bring hip hop and Bollywood together.
