Plot summary
Dia Srivastav left Shamli years ago for New York, and the town has not forgotten it. Word reaches her that her former dance teacher, Makarand Shukla, whom the locals call Masterji, is seriously ill, so she travels home, only to find that he is already gone. The Ajanta Theatre, the hall where Masterji taught the town's dancers, faces demolition because the authorities consider the land too valuable to waste. With Doctor, the theatre's caretaker, Dia decides to save the hall by staging a theatrical production in it. She is given two months to show that the theatre still matters to the community, and every performer must come from Shamli. She recruits inexperienced locals, among them Imran, Anokhi, Chaudhary Om Singh, Mohan Sharma and Mr. Chojar, and the residents greet her with mistrust and ridicule.
