Plot summary
Julie Caffret writes an advice column in Los Angeles, where she works with Doug, her ex-husband. She joins the therapy group run by Dr. Pieter Fales, a German psychologist and widower whose teenage daughter Alison lives with him. The group includes Gilbert, a handyman from Julie's apartment building, Pat, a Wellesley graduate who works as a stripper and is secretly involved with Pieter, and Rosemary Boyle, a spinster. The sessions take place in Pieter's house. Cut-and-paste notes arrive for Julie, threatening murder and assault. The authorities offer little help, and Doug warns her against answering the letter writer in her column. Women from the group are stalked by an unseen figure armed with shearing scissors.
