Plot summary
Sam Staziak is a psychic police officer in Los Angeles, a Scanner with telepathic and telekinetic abilities. Years earlier he captured Karl Volkin and sent him to prison, and he killed Volkin's brother when the two broke into a home. Volkin has escaped from a mental hospital and is draining the strength of weaker Scanners to build his own power. Scanners take Ephemerol, a drug developed in the 1940s for pregnancy pain whose side effect was to create people like them. Carrie Goodart, a Scanner and a friend of Sam's, was looking for Sam's mother, Rachel, at the institute where she works when Volkin broke in. Volkin has sworn to take Sam's power and kill him.
