Plot summary
Echo is a high school freshman, still grieving her older sister Zoë a year after the murder. Her mother abuses antidepressants, her father works overtime, and the sessions with a family therapist do little for her. Zoë's boyfriend Marc is a prime suspect in the killing, though a confessed killer has been convicted and Echo still does not trust him. When she spots Zoë's diary on the passenger seat of Marc's car, she smashes the window with a rock and takes it home. In its pages she reads that Zoë hoped to leave after graduation and start a modeling career in New York or Los Angeles, and finds a note about an unspecified traumatic incident involving Zoë's best friend Carley and two older men, Jason and Tom. Echo asks Marc to help her get inside Jason's house.
